Nov. 26 - I've just added the data we collected into the table, so now we can start analyzing it
Nov. 28 - We have the calculations completed, but I'll post them up later.

Just some quick definitions:

Calorie - the amount of heat (energy) required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by 1 °C
Calorimetry - the science of measuring the heat of chemical reactions or physical changes
Calorific value - the amount of heat released during the combustion of a specified amount of a substance
- measured in units of energy per units of mass (eg. cal/g, kcal/kg)

Some info we should obtain in our experiments:
The heat of combustion for fuels is expressed as the HHV, LHV, or GHV:
  • HHV - determined by bringing all the products of combustion back to the original pre-combustion temperature, and in particular condensing any vapor produced.
  • LHV - determined by subtracting the heat of vaporization of the water vapor from the higher heating value
  • AR - accounts for water in the exhaust leaving as vapor, and includes liquid water in the fuel prior to combustion

For the fuels: Mr. Vincent said we should see him afterschool one day and see what materials the school already has available for us to use
